I Can’t Wait to Bring City Hall into the Light

The Freedom of the Press is the bedrock of our Democracy. Journalists are the watchdogs checking the powers of our local leaders and ensuring their decisions shrouded in secrecy are revealed to the people who elect them.

Last week marked the nationwide celebration of Sunshine Week. First launched in 2005, when our city elected the current mayor, the American Society of News Editors organize the annual event to promote access to public information and open government.

Unfortunately, here in Cleveland, dark clouds have blocked rays of sunshine. City Hall’s lack of honesty, transparency and accountability is troubling. Last month, a national publication investigating police misconduct settlements, called the city’s record-keeping “shoddy, confusing, or incomplete.”

Another embarrassing episode involved a journalist from a local outlet receiving a call from City Hall acknowledging but not fulfilling a public records request that was made three years prior. In another example, citing years of delays, the local newspaper’s editorial board threatened to sue the current administration for obstructing Open Records Laws. It was also reported the City was the subject of more open records request complaints than any other public entity in Ohio.

I’m asking you to look at the mayoral candidates, and ask yourself, “Will this person fight for me?” If the answer is no, then they’re part of the problem and it’s time we try something new. From limiting voting access during a pandemic, restricting public comment at city council meetings, burying critical city news and updates in an evening press release, or denying your right to vote on ballot initiatives or charter amendments, City Hall keeps residents in the dark.

I am committed to creating a culture at City Hall that is honest, open and accessible. One that regularly updates the public and members of the media. As Mayor, I will introduce legislation to improve public access and implement training to ensure compliance with open records and meetings laws.

Cleveland needs a mayor that is open, honest and transparent. I can’t wait to bring City Hall into the light. Are you with me?
